"You can discover more about a person in an hour of play than in a year of conversation." Plato

Play is the theme of the newest exhibition coming to Old Town Hall this Spring – an especially appropriate subject after our record-setting winter weather. “Come Out and Play” explores the world of play through photography, toys and games, many of which are drawn from the Society’s collections.

The world of the imagination is illustrated in a variety of ways. Our collection, for example, includes a number of remarkable miniature buildings dating from the late 19th to the first part of the 20th century. The earliest originally belonged to the family of Capt. Edward Stratton, a Civil War veteran who lived at 39 S. Main St., Mullica Hill. This remarkable village descended through the Lippincott family. It and another Victorian house that descended through the Kirby and Jones families of Mullica Hill were recently conserved and will be on exhibit for the first time, along with the Ebner family miniature farmstead from Ewan.

Come Out and Play is not just the exhibition title – it is also an invitation to play – a play area includes a selection of traditional toys meant to played with.

A striking thing is that even through toys have changed in the last quarter century, the need to use one’s imagination and be playful remains the same. This is an exhibition for all ages that we invite you not to miss.
